As one of San Antonio’s most desirable suburbs, Helotes is quaint and rustic, yet a short drive from downtown San Antonio. With less than 10,000 residents, it offers a great lifestyle and a world of opportunities. Located in Bexar County on the far northwest side of San Antonio, Texas, Helotes is named from the Spanish word “elotes” – corn on the cob.
It is an old settlement but a young city, incorporated about 40 years ago in 1981. Helotes was a stagecoach stop and farming community until the 1940s when the John T. Floore Country Store opened. This signaled the transition toward commerce and economic growth. The Floore dance hall draws musical talent and is a Texas Historic Landmark, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Helotes Creek is a valley that transitions out of Texas Hill Country, in the northwestern section of Bexar County and Greater San Antonio. The city of Helotes is nestled in the valley, approximately 16 miles from downtown San Antonio.
The main street in Helotes is Bandera Road, which heads northwest to Bandera, Texas. Bandera Road is part of Texas State Highway 16, which meanders north to Oklahoma.
Access to the San Antonio beltway – the Charles. W. Anderson Loop – is 2 miles southeast of central Helotes. Leaving the tranquility of Helotes to go to work in the city is a reasonable commute, and gives you the best of both worlds.
Right around the corner from your new house, there are lots of things to see and do in Helotes. The city lies at the entrance to Texas Hill Country, so there is a lot to explore close to home.
If you don’t mind driving a few minutes, you can avail yourself of all that San Antonio has to offer. Malls, museums, concerts, street festivals, theme parks, fine dining and nightclubs – you name it!
If that’s not enough, take a little road trip: Austin – the capital of Texas – is just under 90 miles away. Heck – drive a couple of hours and enjoy the Gulf Coast beaches!
